Council Mergers

In June 2015, the Minister for Public Services announced Welsh Government’s preference that the 22 County Councils should be merged to form just 8 or 9 councils. This will be a massive change for public services in Wales. There are two options for North Wales either 3 councils or 2 councils. For Conwy residents this means:

Option 1:
Conwy County Borough Council merges with Denbighshire County Council.

Option 2:
Conwy County Borough Council merges with Gwynedd County Council and Anglesey Council.

The Welsh Government has stated it has not made a final decision, and they will consult on a draft ‘Mergers and Reform’ Bill. This will include further formal consultation on proposals for Local Authority mergers, which we hope as many Conwy residents as possible take part and make their voices heard.

An unprecedented amount of responses were received by the Post Office and over 600 hundred names were collected in the petition by local resident Victor Hunt. The Mayor, Members and Staff of Abergele Town Council were saddened by the loss of two of its long standing members Cllr John Pitt and Cllr Ken Sudlow.

Cllr John Pitt has sat on Abergele Town Council since 1991 and was a member of several of the Committees of the Council.  In recent years Cllr Pitt had an interest in the Environment and Climate change matters and had contributed to a Welsh Government programme that the Town Council had been selected to participate in and was the only Town Council in North Wales to be selected in 2013.
Cllr Pitt was a very private person outside of the Town Council

Cllr Ken Sudlow has been a member of Abergele Town Council since 2006 and had a keen interest in the financial side of the Council as he had a background in Banking.  Cllr Sudlow was Chairman of the Policy and Finance and General Purpose and Planning Committees many times.  Cllr Sudlow was actively involved in the Grants and Estimates Committees of the Council and had an understanding of the running and procedures of the Town Council and its regulations.
Cllr Sudlow was very committed to his family outside of the Town Council
Both members will be very sadly missed by the Council.
